Hospice & Palliative Care
Here at the Jewish Home, our physicians, nurses, social workers and clergy are specialists in hospice and palliative care, and use a multi-disciplinary team approach to address the whole person – their physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs, as well as those of their family – so that they may live each day to the fullest.
Hospice care provides comfort and support to those in the end stages of terminal illness, focusing on comfort and quality of life, as opposed to cure. Hospice services may be delivered in the home, a comfort care home, within a hospital, or in a nursing home. Hospice services are typically covered under Medicare, Medicaid, most private insurance plans, HMOs and other managed care organizations.
Palliative care focuses on improving the overall quality of life of an individual facing serious illness. It differs from hospice care in that it may be delivered at any time during an illness while curative measures are being taken. That is, the patient may not necessarily be terminally ill. Palliative care relieves symptoms such as pain, shortness of breath, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite, etc. so that the patient may gain the strength to carry on with daily life.
Jewish Hospice Program
The Jewish Hospice program provides a specialized form of patient-centered care in one’s home, a hospital, or in another hospice setting to assist patients and families in making their loved one’s remaining time both meaningful and comfortable. Our Jewish Hospice Program volunteers are specially trained in Jewish customs and rituals, so that a person’s beliefs regarding holidays, family, and end-of-life are respected and adhered to.
Jewish Senior Life is proud to offer hospice care in collaboration with the following organizations:
